The focus of the FEBS Education Committee’s Congress sessions is on 'Improving the Learning Experience through Student Engagement'. There is a Special Session of three lectures and a discussion to introduce aspects of the topic relevant to teaching and learning in the molecular life sciences, closely followed by a Workshop. Both events take place on Sunday 4 September; see the Congress program for schedule details.

FEBS Education Workshop — Beyond the Lecture: Helping Students Learn by Doing (15.30−17.30)

"In this interactive workshop, we will review the Scientific Teaching framework developed for the US National Academies of Science Summer Institute for Undergraduate Biology Education. Then, beginning with 'backward design', each participant will develop learning objectives for one of the concepts that they teach, and determine how they will evaluate students’ mastery of those objectives. We will then examine a variety of active learning approaches as models or 'inspirations'. Each participant will develop an active learning strategy for their concept, aligned with their learning objectives and assessments. Throughout the workshop, participants will share their ideas in small groups, gaining insights from one another. Come to the workshop with a topic in mind − you'll leave with a detailed outline of how you will teach this topic in your class (even if your class is next week!)."

Research and Career Skills
A FEBS Special Session on Research and Career Skills, as well as an associated Workshop, will focus on writing and publishing scientific articles − with the aim of helping early-career researchers refine their manuscript-writing skills and better understand best practice in publishing their work. The sessions are co-organized by the FEBS Publications and Education Committees, and take place on Wednesday 7 September; see the Congress program for schedule details.

FEBS Research and Career Skills Workshop — The Art and Science of How to Write a Scientific Paper (15.30−17.30)

This workshop will reinforce key points highlighted in the earlier Special Session talks. Participants will work in small groups to discuss, with the aid of facilitators, a draft manuscript of a biochemistry paper. After reading through the manuscript, and with the aid of 'Instructions to Authors' and directed group discussion, each group will be tasked with identifying aspects of good and bad practice within the manuscript. The groups will also discuss and identify the key elements of the manuscript and produce a 200-word abstract that effectively conveys the aims, key results and conclusion of the study.
Science and Society
The topic of this Special Session organized by the FEBS Science & Society Committee will be 'GMOs: Applications to Medicine and Agronomy'. It will take place on Tuesday 6 September 2016 (12.30−14.30); see the Congress program for the session schedule.
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) have been produced by modern biotechnological methods for decades, and some have important applications, particularly in agronomy and medicine. GM plants, for instance, have been engineered to have new properties such as resistance to herbicides, tolerance to drought, improved nutritional value, or the capacity to produce therapeutic substances. However, in spite of the accumulation of reassuring scientific knowledge and no demonstration of any toxic effect, some organizations, particularly in Europe, are fiercely opposed to the use of GM plants for food production, although it is clear that improvements of the global food supply are needed to feed the world's growing population in a sustainable way. The three talks in the session will address recent scientific advances as well as societal issues in this area, with a particular focus on GM plants, and the talks will be followed by a general discussion with the audience.

Gender Issues in Science
This Special Session, organized by the FEBS Working Group on Women in Science, will look at 'Gender Issues in Science Education'.
